A note from Tapan
“This was my first real step into the mountains. I went with fear — heights, unknown, everything. I came back different. Somewhere between those climbs and silence, I realized — you either love the mountains, or you don’t. There’s no middle.”
What I experienced
Hampta Pass wasn’t just a trek for me — it was a turning point. My first proper trek, and honestly, I was scared before starting.
The first day started with green valleys — soft, open meadows, almost peaceful. But slowly, the terrain started changing.
From green to rocky brown, and then to snow. It felt like walking through different worlds in just a few days.
Crossing the pass was the hardest part — physically and mentally. But once you do it, something shifts inside you.
And then Chandratal. Completely different — cold, silent, and unreal. That moment just stays with you.
This trek made me realize something simple — mountains aren’t casual. Either you love them deeply, or you don’t connect at all.
Day by day
How the days actually went.
- 01
Day 1
Delhi → Manali
Overnight bus from Delhi to Manali (₹600 approx). Reached Manali by morning. Used Manali as a halt, not a destination.
- 02
Day 2
Manali → Jobra → Trek starts
Reached basecamp (Jobra) via trek company vehicle. Started trek through forest trails and reached first campsite in green meadows.
- 03
Day 3
Jwara to Balu Ka Ghera
Long walk through changing terrain — from green valleys to rocky landscapes. Campsite surrounded by mountains.
- 04
Day 4
Hampta Pass crossing
The toughest day. Steep climb, snow patches, and finally crossing Hampta Pass. Descended to Spiti side — completely different landscape.
- 05
Day 5
Chandratal Lake
Visited Chandratal — cold, silent, and unreal. One of the most beautiful places I’ve seen.
- 06
Day 6
Return to Manali
Drive back to Manali. Rest day. Explored local market and nearby areas.
- 07
Day 7
Sethan village exploration
Visited Sethan village — quiet, less crowded, and much better than busy Manali.
Local tips
Things I'd tell a friend before they go.
- Choose a good trek company — I went with Searching Souls (~₹8000 Manali to Manali) and had a great experience.
- Indiahikes is premium and one of the best — but costs more.
- Carry proper trekking shoes and warm layers — weather changes fast.
- Your first trek will test you mentally more than physically.
- Don’t treat Manali as a destination — it’s crowded and overhyped.
- Must visit: Sethan village — peaceful and underrated compared to Manali.
- Stay hydrated and follow your guide — safety matters a lot in this trek.
